There was a time when even opening the blinds felt like too much.
When you live with Complex PTSD, your nervous system is constantly in overdrive — alert, exhausted, and stuck in survival patterns.
In that state, even small things — like stepping outside or letting sunlight touch your skin — can feel overwhelming.
But over time, I’ve found that sunlight plays a quiet, powerful role in healing.
Not as a cure, but as a gentle companion.
Here’s what I’ve learned:
🌤 Sunlight and the Nervous System
Our bodies respond to light.
Morning sunlight helps reset our circadian rhythm — something that often becomes disrupted after trauma.
When I began spending just 5 minutes outside in the early part of the day, I noticed:
- A subtle shift in my sleep
- A slight lift in mental fog
- A quiet sense of regulation
It wasn’t instant. But it was real.
🧠 It Boosts Mood and Emotional Regulation
Sunlight naturally boosts serotonin — a key brain chemical that supports:
- Mood regulation
- Emotional resilience
- Appetite and energy
When you live with hypervigilance, shutdown, or emotional numbness, even a small increase in serotonin can help shift your baseline — just enough to feel less heavy.
I didn’t always feel “good.” But I felt less stuck.
And that was enough to keep going.
🌱 It Encourages Presence
Sunlight helped bring me back into the moment.
Sometimes I’d:
- Sit outside and listen to the birds
- Feel the sun on my hands
- Notice the breeze across my face
These small sensations helped me reconnect with my body in safe, manageable ways — especially when disconnection or dissociation made that difficult.
🪟 It Doesn’t Have to Be Big
If stepping outside feels like too much — that’s okay.
Sometimes I just:
- Sat near a sunny window
- Opened the front door for a few deep breaths
- Let the light hit my face and reminded myself:
I’m still here.
This wasn’t about pushing myself.
It was about inviting something gentle in.
🤍 A Small, Kind Reminder
The sun won’t fix everything.
But it is part of what helps me hold on.
In a world that often feels overwhelming, sunlight is something I can return to.
It’s grounding. Natural. Safe.
It reminds me that life still moves — even when I feel stuck.
So if today feels like too much, maybe you don’t need a big healing step.
Maybe just start here.
Let a little light in.
You deserve that warmth.
Always.
