There’s a particular kind of hurt that sinks in deep when it happens over and over.
It’s the hurt of being chronically invalidated.
Maybe you’ve felt it too.
You try to express a feeling — and someone brushes it off.
You share a memory — and they say it didn’t happen like that.
You set a boundary — and they act like you’re being difficult.
What Chronic Invalidation Teaches You
Over time, this kind of repeated dismissal teaches you something dangerous:
- That your feelings don’t matter
- That your memories aren’t trustworthy
- That you’re overreacting again
- That your version of reality must be wrong
It’s not always loud or obvious.
Sometimes invalidation sounds like:
- “It wasn’t that bad.”
- “You’re just too sensitive.”
- “You always make everything about you.”
- Or complete silence when you needed support the most.
How Invalidation Shapes Self-Perception
When chronic invalidation happens — especially in childhood — it can quietly shape how you see yourself:
- You might start to doubt your instincts
- You might shrink yourself to avoid conflict
- You might silence your needs just to feel safe
And you carry that into adulthood, not always realising why certain moments hit so hard — or why trusting yourself feels impossible.
You’re Not Imagining It
If this feels familiar, let me say this clearly:
- You’re not being dramatic
- You’re not making it up
- And your experiences and emotions are valid
You deserve to take up space in this world — with all your feelings, needs, and memories.
The Path to Healing
Healing from chronic invalidation isn’t easy.
It’s often slow, messy, and full of second-guessing.
But it is possible.
It starts by:
- Learning to listen to yourself again
- Honouring the feelings that were once dismissed
- Gently reminding yourself:
👉 What I went through matters. What I feel is real.
You don’t have to wait for someone else to validate you anymore.
You get to do that for yourself now.
And if you’re not there yet? That’s okay too.
Healing is a journey — one small act of self-trust at a time.
With you in this,
🕊️ Ness
